Programming Shot Dose Issues

Post by eph85 »

I'm trying to program shot doses in my profile and I can program number of seconds, but there are these numbers next to the second count--"imp" and then another number. When I hit the double shot icon, my dose doesn't stop where I had programmed.

Any ideas?

This is the same for both the tank and the plumbed versions.

I think I have figured out what is going on, though I am not particularly in favor of it working that way. The seconds is obviously the number of seconds it is taking as you are programming it and the second "IMP" number stands for the number of revolutions of the impeller in the volumetric sensor mechanism. When you are programming a shot in this mode, the seconds is meaningless, other than for that particular shot. What is actually saved is the number of turns of the impeller shaft.

So when you pull an actual shot, the water is going to run for the programmed number of impeller turns. The number of seconds will vary all over the place depending on the specific coffee, amount of coffee, roast level, grind, and tamp.

The bottom line is to ignore seconds read-out while programming the dose. You are actual programming the water by volume not by time. For a future upgrade I might recommend to CCS to skip the seconds read out and instead show perhaps impeller turns and ounces or ml (depending on what mode you have the machine in).The current seconds read-out in volumetric programming mode adds only confusion to the mix.

The timing number does have a use. If you use the "grinding" menu option then if the shot is outside the timing by the set amount of seconds (5, 10, etc) then the machine will alarm showing that you need to adjust the grind. So I don't agree that they should remove it.

Here's the quote from the latest version of the manual:
Grinding This feature when enabled will give the user a notice while brewing if the grind is too fine or coarse. This is helpful to help achieve better results. When enabled the user can set the grinding for a tolerance of 5, 10, or 15 seconds. So if a shot button is programmed for 25 seconds and the grinding is set to 5 seconds then if the shot runs for less than 20 seconds a message will appear on the display “Coarse Grind” Adjusting the grind finer will improve the shots. If the shot runs for more than 30 seconds then the display will show the message “Too Fine Grind” Adjusting the grind coarser will improve the shots.

Good point. I don't use that feature so I forgot about that. Of course, if you do use that feature and get the "Too Fine" message, for example, you just need to realize that it should actually be interpreted as "Too fine" OR "Tamped too Hard" OR "Beans too Old" OR "Overdosed", etc.

Thanks Chas. I just let the thing run and the shot never stopped... I don't know what i did wrong.

i've got leaks all over the place and i'm sending the machine back this week to have ccs fix it all the right way as it should have been done in the first place...

Got the Dream T about a month ago after having the Mini Vivaldi since about 2006.

On the Dream T I have been doing manual double shots of 35 seconds. I tried programming the double shot button but it stops well short of 2 oz at about 26 seconds in. Tried programming multiple times, but it will never fill to 2 oz or run for 35 seconds. I honestly wasn’t able to get the Mini Vivaldi buttons to work well, either.

Are these programmable buttons just a useless gimmick?

I've owned all three models of S1 and have not had this issue with any of them. What are the steps you are using to program the Volumetric dosing?

Check this manual if you haven't already: Dream GUI Manual
