I have an original S1. The steam boiler broke a year or so ago. No interest in spending over $600 to fix a 17 year old machine. Recommend a triple basket from Chris Coffee. It will hold 21g. That is all I have use for years. And yes the auto dose is just a measures volume of water.
BTW, you will need a bottomless portafilter for the triple basket.

Re: Steam boiler issue
Took apart my S1 today to try and figure why no water to steam boiler. Can some explain how part 7696 works. I have water prior that that part. Took out the gliecer . Did not see anything. Appears that 7696 has some calcification. Can it be soaked in citric acid. Just the metal part.

Yippee. I Will be pulling shots all day long for 7 days. So tired of French Press. NEED SOME ESPRESSO!...

Re: Triple Shots
Wife pull a triple with the standard double button. She said very good, and said that same volume as with a double basket. She is not into the scientific aspects of espresso, so now she doesnt weight the beans, doesnt time her shots, doesnt measure her volume, but is she said it was good and better ...

Triple Shots
Just got my new Portafilter with a new triple basket. I am currently in Saudi Arabia, and will not be home for 2 weeks. Wife is trying to use the triple basket. What are the rules? Just push the double button, or reprogram for a longer pull??? The first one she did with the triple was to push single...

Great Advice. Thanks. Sure will seem different from pushing the 2 Cup button on the S1 and i guess timing the lever action. Hope the wife can adjust.

Re: Basket Improvements
Any additional comments on the new PRECISION baskets, and any comments on the new triple. I have the old Bottonless Portafilter and the website says the new triple will not work. So I would have to buy the new portafilter which comes with the new triple basket. Is it worth the $90???

Re: Breville BES900XL - Competition?
I was considering this machine ( Current S1 owner) since I can get one for free with my United Airlines points. I have read every post (over 250) on CoffeeGeek.com. And have decided to pass, even though it would be free. Why? A few reasons 1. I truly believe you get what you pay for 2. Made in China...

S1 Rebuild
Thinking of totally rebuilding my S1. I have had it for 8-9 years (Thanks to Chris COffee, 2005). I have done minimum maintenance . Also wiggle and routinely chemical flush. Machine runs great pulling espresso, which is what we almost exclusively use for iced lattes. The steam boiler will not fill, ...

Re: Steam Boiler Not Refilling
I am having problems with my steam tank not filling. Pulling espresso shots are no problem. So the brew head works normal. We most always do iced coffees so the steam is seldom used. After reading the above post, i dont see how the part 280 sticking could be my problem since the brew head functions ...

I did almost the same type of set up for mine. It is on the opposite side of the kitchen from the sink. Next to the refrig.
