Dreams of Espresso 'Off Grid'

Post by keithcutter »

Moving the family 'a bit further out' into the wilds of North Idaho to enjoy the homesteading life. Entire family is looking forward to it, but I'm wondering about espresso...

It occurred to me recently that solar energy and 2kw worth of electric heating elements in my S1 VII won't go together so well. I've been drinking espresso for 30 years, so this is a major bummer!

Anyone know of an off-grid espresso solution? Someone told me espresso machines used to be heated using propane elements, but I've never seen one. Anyone here heard of such a thing?

Apparently they are readily available in Europe.

Here are two threads on Home Barista that discuss the subject.

Hope you don't have to give up espresso!.

Good luck.

Mypressi Twist will give the best shots, but you'll need to stock up on the air cartridges. (Which also can't be transported by air). You'll also need a hand grinder.

You may want to consider the hand pump driven Handpresso Domepod as well. It now uses ground coffee. Orphan Espresso sells the whole kit with a good hand grinder. This may be the most "eco-friendly" solution. You can also roast your own beans in a pan over a fire. Might be a fun homestead ritual too.

Thanks for the ideas. A single group propane powered machine would be a great solution for me. I'll have to keep my eyes open.
