softner re-chargable

Post by Barry »

Anyone know if the unit Chris sells is re-chargable or does it need to be replaced? If it is rechargable, what is the process and how often can it be done?

Thanks,
Barry

It's a replacement cartridge. You can't recharge it.

I did a web search and found a much better price on the softener cartridges and the carbon filter cartridges than Chris' prices. I think I got 3 carbon cartriges with a smaller filter particle rating than the ones Chris sells for the price of one of his cartidges.

It'll probably be a year before you need it but this site is worth bookmarking:

Filter replacement

Is 1 year for the carbon filter a conservative estimate? I have no idea how much water will pump through my water filter. Can you taste the difference when it needs replacing?

Chris recommends the use of the pressure regulator/pressure gauge kit he sells. When set to 25-30psi and the pressure starts to drop because the filter is getting clogged, that is when it needs to be replaced.

However, I figure that I'll just use the hardness strips to check when the softener cartridge is spent and replace them both at the same time. That probably means changing the carbon cartridge more often than necessary, but it's cheap.

I know I ercharged mine, or atleast I think I did. I even remember yalking to Chris on how to do it???? I have since plumed into the water line froma different source other than the one from the sink, which is now soft from an whole house system. Removed the inline softner cart and just use a more hign end carbon filer from Home Depot

IN FACT , I remember removing the carbon filter, moving the softner cartridge to that one, putting a hand full of salt in the first filter holder and running salt through to recharge the resin.

Interesting. I've e-mailed the question to Chris for clarification. I'll post his reply when received. I sure thought the softener cartridges were a replacement item rather than rechargeable. I've looked in various places for lower cost sources for these cartridges. Neither on Chris' site nor any of the others did it say that these could be recharged, but then they didn't say they couldn't either nor, if they can, did I see any instructions for doing so.

Chris says that the 10" softener cartridges are rechargeable. He didn't give me any instructions but I imagine it's the same as most of the others. Make up a brine solution with water softener salt - not table salt. Soak for several hours, then flush well until no salt taste remains.
