Re: Silicone long life Group Gaskets available

I noticed yesterday when putting my portafilter in that it felt a little different. Then, while pulling a shot, I notice some clear water dripping into the cup. So, I changed out the silicone gasket - and then came here to see that it's been almost 5 years. There was a considerable build up undernea...

I've had a Mini now for about 5 years I think. All the things that were different disturbed me at first. But now I love the lever for steam. I love the fact that I can turn off the steam boiler. For me, that's 14.5 grams in and 30 grams out in 40 seconds. At some point in my experience with my Mini someone suggested that the Vivaldis can do with a longer shot since the basket is deeper. I think I've been influenced by that idea. In any case, I'm happy with my shots.

I can't say my opinion is that of an expert. I can only tell you what my experience is. I find that with a proper grind on my Compak K10 PB, a good shot on my mini with preinfusion is around 40 seconds total. Thats with a typical 14.5 gram load in a double basket.

Re: Minimum Warmup Time?

I get plenty of steam in 5 minutes. It was a pleasant surprise for me too. I don't know that it gets more powerful as time goes by. It is, in effect, up to steam.

Re: Minimum Warmup Time?

my wife turns on the Mini 1 hour before I get up. Then I turn on the steam boiler 5 minutes before I make our lattes. That's in the morning. In the afternoon when I want a latte, I'll follow the same course. If I need less time for the brew boiler I'd love to know it. Maybe I can spare myself burnin...

Re: 2nd Vivaldi - Plumbed or Pourover

It's interesting. I got the mini because I feared the process of plumbing. Then I tired of the in-tank softener so I put Chris' under sink system in - so, I'm feeling kind of silly. Plumbing wasn't such a big deal. Still, I don't find the process of filling the tank or emptying the drain tray very t...

That's it. It was 19.21 Euros to the U.S. for me - ala 25.43 USD. I don't know if it'll make a difference in taste. But at least the picture looks nicer than the baskets I have. I do get caught up in the aesthetics.

Re: Basket Improvements

I got a reply to my e-mail inquiry today. You can't order them on line yet but you can by e-mail. Cost delivered to U.S. for the 15 gram basket is 18.84 Euros - which a conversion calculator tells me is $24.18. That seems competitive with the VST. I think I'll try one.

Re: Brew temp woes on my new Mini Vivaldi II

my experience is that it sometimes takes more like 35 or even 40 seconds to get a 2 oz. shot on the vivaldi. I think some have suggested that the deeper basket with the 53mm requires longer. Are you saying that even just getting drips out with a tighter grind you're only reading 7 on the pressure gu...

Re: Brew temp woes on my new Mini Vivaldi II

some times I think we overcomplicate things. One of the beautiful things about these machines, it seems to me, is the ease with which we can change temperatures. I'd suggest you forget about the temp offset and just change the temperature. If you are brewing at 94, go up a degree or 2 and see how th...

Re: Double and naked portafilter problem

I agree. You've got way too much in the double basket - thus no head room. I never use the single basket so I can't account for the high dose you're using there. Are you sure you're using the single basket? - I use the double basket with the single portafilter and about 14.5 grams.

Abraham Lincoln said something like this, "when you make a bad bargain, hug it all the tighter." Just a way of saying don't bother too much with regrets. I certainly had these feeling of foreboding when I bought my mini. I started out on a quest to replace a $100 steam machine and ended up...

It just doesn't make sense to me. Why should it matter what is in the portafilter restricting the flow - coffee or a rubber disc? The gauge should behave the same shouldn't it?

Re: Pressure fluctuations. Unable to hold it!!

Others may know better, but if pressure is holding with the blank, it seems to me it has to be either the coffee, your grinder or both. Starbucks espresso beans are not a good test. Alas! I experienced something similar today with my own roasted decaf beans that I took a little too dark.

Re: Pressure fluctuations. Unable to hold it!!

After you cleaned up the screens and installed new gasket, did it still leak around the portafilter? Have you been backflushing with detergent? Is the machine only 8 months old? Have you called Chris' - I've found them very helpful in telling me what to look for. I know this doesn't help directly, j...

Other people are looking for the cookie instead of a soupy mess. You have found it. Seriously though, banging it out right away does make a difference. I'm guessing the fact that you are using a triple basket just means there's that much more dry ingredient that gets wet and then hard. I've removed ...

Re: How do you pull a triple?

My experience is one mostly of failure. I haven't tried it for some time. I used a bottomless portafilter and a triple basket. I loaded 21 grams in there and pulled 2 ounces of espresso. The failure part is that I almost always got leakage around the portafilter. The shot was okay but the leakage of...

When I asked Tim a few weeks ago, he said they'd be available in 8-10 weeks. So, I gather, that's the plan. It's unclear about availability in the U.S. I suspect the same is true of Canada. Those interested might send Tim an e-mail to let him know there's a market on this continent.

I've enjoyed it more by using the double basket in the bottomless and still using about 14 grams of coffee. Using the bigger basket and 20 grams has often caused me more trouble than it's worth.

I finally lubricated this and I'm glad I did. This beast is so powerful with steaming that the first couple of seconds are crucial. Just the little bit of sticking was causing me to get large bubbles right at the start. Now it's nice and smooth and so much better.
